Using EWOT with Other Therapies to Improve Your Health

Terry Shelton

What is the Goal?

As a 70-year-old who has spent years and years studying about my own health, I believe that Exercise with Oxygen Therapy (EWOT), when combined with therapies like infrared saunas, red light therapy, and meditation, can help all of us to live a healthier and longer life. My goal is to share what I’ve learned about these therapies, not so much to sell you something, but to help you feel better and stay active. Below, I explain how these therapies work together, supported by some research, to hopefully improve your healthspan and perhaps even your lifespan.

What is EWOT?

EWOT is exercising while breathing oxygen at a high concentration through a mask. This increases oxygen in your blood, plasma, and tissues, supporting energy production and exercise recovery. I’ve used EWOT myself for over eight years and it profoundly helped me be more active.

EWOT and Infrared Saunas

Infrared saunas produce heat to deeply warm the body from the inside which causes sweating, better blood flow, and detoxification. Performing an EWOT session followed by an infrared sauna can amplify the effects of exercise and then aid in recovery. I do a vigorous 15-minute EWOT session, then spend 20 minutes in my infrared sauna. It leaves me feeling less achy and more refreshed, and I don't need to wait as long for my next workout. A 2018 systematic review in Evidence-Based Complement and Alternative Medicine titled "Clinical Effects of Regular Dry Sauna Bathing: A Systematic Review" (published April 24, 2018, DOI: 10.1155/2018/1857413) explores the health benefits of regular dry sauna bathing, including both Finish-style and infrared saunas.

EWOT and Red Light Therapy

Red light therapy uses low-level red and near-infrared light to improve cell function by stimulating mitochondria which provides the energy required for cellular activity. It reduces inflammation and aids tissue repair. When you use EWOT first, the extra oxygen helps mitochondria produce energy more effectively. Some research on red light therapy has shown potential benefits for muscle recovery and inflammation reduction. These effects might be amplified in oxygen-rich environments due to improved cellular respiration and reduced hypoxia.

EWOT and Meditation

Meditation, like deep breathing or mindfulness, lowers stress and clears the mind. When combined with EWOT, the extra oxygen improves brain function, making meditation more effective. At times, I meditate for 10 minutes after EWOT and feel calmer and more focused.

How to Do It: After an EWOT session, sit quietly and focus on slow breathing for 10-15 minutes. You can keep the oxygen mask on if your setup allows. This helps your mind and body relax, improving overall health.

Why This Matters!

I’ve dedicated many years to the understanding of my own health. I believe and see in myself that EWOT, infrared saunas, red light therapy, and meditation support a person's cells, muscles, heart, and mind. I believe these therapies can help you stay active and live well, whether you’re 50 or 80. Check these therapies out with your health professional to see how they might work for you. Your health is worth the effort.
